Looking for inspiration - Danish
PM Lars Løkke Rasmussen was guest of DABS and held talks with people from the
Danish business community during a short visit to Singapore.
It
was a full house event with 110 members of DABS turning up at Singapore Cricket Club
when Danish premier minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen passed by Singapore as a warm
up to a larger Asian trip.
It
is the first time a reigning Danish PM has been in Singapore and his
perspective of the
current developments back in Denmark was followed closely by all. But he was
not only in Singapore to talk. An important part of his mission was to listen.
Inviting
a handful of Danes representing various parts of the Danish business environment
for a closed early morning session underscored this point. Løkke Rasmussen
was eager to learn and listen to experiences and ideas which could be part of
his toolkit for his project Denmark for the future.
Apart
from the DABS function in the Cricket Club, Lars Løkke Rasmussen met officials
from The ministry of Education Danish PM and also had private talks with Singaporean
Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

DABS' Christmas Lunch and the award "Årets Julenisse"
The Danish school in Singapore, Danish Supplementary School
(DDS), became this year's winner of theprestigious award; "Årets Julenisse".
The award was, true to tradition, handed out in connection
with DABS' Christmas lunch in the Danish Seamen's Church in early December, and
it was the 12th time the award was given for a significant contribution to the
Danish society in Singapore.
The award was received by the school Chairman Tine Falther,
who has also been one of the driving forces behind the school's genesis. The
school opened in August 2009 and has about 125 pupils.
Approximately the same number of people attended this year's
DABS Christmas luncheon and not even a violent thunderstorm just before the
beginning of the lunch could keep the attendees away. Once again they all enjoyed
the traditional Danish Christmas dishes including the "ris a la mande".
The Christmas quiz was won by Bo Christensen who also won
the quiz in 2008.
Ball of the (quarter) Century - DABS 25th anniversary ball
A huge turnout and great night for DABS when the
25th anniversary was celebrated at Sentosa. 265 members and friends of DABS and
the Danish Community celebrated the 25 year anniversary party in style at Amara
Sanctuary Resort at Sentosa. It was the largest turnout in the history of the
association and all really had a ball, so to speak.
Everybody dressed up - in some ways dressed down - the
celebration turned out to be a classic high end event with colourful ladies in
all kind of fashion dresses and smart but maybe not so colorful gentlemen in
black tuxedos - as observed by guest speaker Uffe Elleman Jensen. The former
Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs has been an often and always welcome guest
in DABS during the years and were also the guest speaker at the inauguration in
1984. He remarked that in the younger years of DABS men often showed up in
tuxedo jackets of various colours. This time he was the only one flashing a white
one.
Another great Dane, Amin Jensen, took care of the entertainment.
His multi-one-manshow on words, voice, harmonica (harp) and guitar in a mix of
Danish and English was highly appreciated.
Another highlight was the close to
midnight celebration of Uffe Elleman Jensen, who was turning 68 at the stroke
of midnight. DABS had organized a large birthday cake, which he cut open
together with wife Alice Westergaard, a former TV-personality and magazine
editor in Denmark. The Royal Danish Embassy was the happy sponsor of birthday
champagne for both DABS and Jensen.
Later the party were ignited by the debut of the DanSing Band, a
Danish party band glued together for the occasion by expats with Line Elmer the
lead singer and local boss at shipping company Lauritzen, Tom Hansen, as lead
guitarist. From there it was all night out party - and hundreds of Danes
showing that they KNOW how to party.

"Spot-on in the Cricket
Club" - Luncheon with the former Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Uffe Ellemann-Jensen.
Around 100 members and friends of DABS
showed up in Singapore Cricket Club for DABS' 25th anniversary luncheon with Uffe Elleman-Jensen as guest speaker. In a fine and well-received address, the
former Danish minister of Foreign Affairs took a broader view of the world in
the past 25 years and showed that he still is a keen and sharp observer of
what's going on around the globe. Answering a question about who would be the
coming president of the EU he said with usual flick in the eye: "Well Tony
Blair is the best qualified - so it will definitely not be him. It will
probably be a completely unknown Dutchman". As it turned out a week later he was
close to spot-on when Herman van Rompuy from the
Flemish-speaking Belgian diaspora got the EU top-job.

On 28 November DABS held its yearly traditional Danish Christmas Lunch. Almost one hundred guests enjoyed the afternoon in the beautiful surroundings of the Danish Seamen's Church on Pender Road.
Every year DABS nominates a person, who has made an special contribution to the Danish community, with the title "Årets Julenisse". This year's "Julenisse" is Søs Bertelsen, who has made a major contribution to the Danish Seamen's Church playgroup and has helped expecting mothers, and mothers with young children in many ways. Søs has also been heavily involved in the organization of the Christmas Bazaar in the church. Her warm, sunny, friendly and positive approach has been much admired and appreciated.
DABS Annual Ball 2008 took place at the Amara Sanctuary Resort and Spa on Sentosa. 208 guests enjoyed an festive evening in the company of good friends, exquisite food and wines. As a surprise a drag queen show opened the ball room doors, and after dinner the guests were entertained by the Danish stand-up-comedian Lasse Rimmer. Rest of the night, a DJ managed to keep the dance floor full by playing Danish music mixed with recent hits.
The Nordic Golf Tournament 2008 took place at the Keppel Club. The challenging course features narrow fairways and require both skills and tactics. This year event welcomed 145 players and was sold out already a week before the actual tournament. After the golf game there was a dinner and prize ceremony on the clubs terrace, with a magnificent view of Sentosa Island and the ships anchored with lights glowing in the evening light. The players enjoyed the tropical evening with a magnificent dinner buffé with softdrinks and cold beer from Carlsberg. The winner of the tournament was Peter Knudsen (Norwegian) of Nordea Bank Singapore . He will get his name engraved on the challenge trophy donated by the Swedish Business Association. The trophy will be on display at the Norwegian Embassy until next year tournament.
