Annual Ball

The annual DABS ball took place at the posh Shangri-La for the secnd year running. Among many highlights was the entertainment by Papkasse Band and the tribute to the first ever honorary member of DABS. Heine Askjaer-Jensen has been part of DABS since the beginning more than 25 years ago. Generously standing applause followed as he received he honour along with his wife Bitten. After much dancing and networking the ending of the night was also typical Danish: hotdogs were served before everyone headed home aorund 3 am. (see our facebook page for more photos)

Luncheon with Morten Løkkegaard, MEP

Morten Løkkegaard visited DABS and Singapore in November. In an inspiring and passionate speech at the Tanglin club, he gave the members a close up interpretation of what's at stake in the Wuro zone and in the EU. At that time all the headlines were pointing a Greece, but Løkkegaard focused on Italy and how the Euro was all too important for Germany, France and the whole EU as such to let it go down the drain. As time has showed, he was spot on. Morten Løkkegaard also gave an insight into the new EU constriction that gives more power to the parliament.

Visit to the headquarters of Jebsen & Jessen

Visit to the headquarters of Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) Pte Ltd and to meet the chairman, Mr. Heinrich Jessen, himself for a presentation of the history of family company.

After light finger food and beverages, the chairman, Heinrich Jessen, gave an inspiring presentation about the development of the company and its ambitious new strategy for growth. The participants admired the passion and professionalism the third generation radiated for the Family business. The participants were amazed by the scope of Jebsen & Jessen’s activities in Asia and the way a technical trading and manufacturing company with a long historical background like Jebsen & Jessen could function so successfully in these modern times.

All participants gave the presentation great remarks. Some were even  of the opinion that they could use the passion and ambitious strategy of Jebsen & Jessen as inspiration in their own business activities.

DABS would like to thank Heinrich Jessen and his team for this high quality event and their outstanding performance.

DABS tour to Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia hosted by Maersk Line

The tour started out with a proper Malaysian-styled delay in the form of a bus driver gone MIA and recently introduced extended immigration procedures at the Singapore-Malaysia border including stickers, stamps and fingerprints.

The representatives from Maersk Line proved to the participants, that they were used to handling the uncertainties of the shipping business and the program of the day was only slightly altered to compensate for the delays in transit .

The participants had the opportunity to visit the bridge and engine room of Grasmere Maersk, a 4,300 TEU containership accompanied  by the vessel's Captain and Chief Engineer, who provided facts on the vessel and accounts of their work life on the containership. The participants were amazed by the large proportions and the daily corporation and coordination needed to meet deadlines and the organization of containers.

Second stop of the day was the control tower of the port, where the ports Senior General Manager of Operations Division, Keld Pedersen, explained about the strategic possibilities of the port and Head of Asia Pacific Liner Operations Cluster, Anders Lund Kristensen, from Maersk Line talked about the company's operations in the Asia Pacific region.

The day ended at a local seafood restaurant in the mangroves with a view to the port.

Luncheon with Mr. Frank Jensen

Frank Jensen at Raffles

By Jan Lund

Frank Jensen, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, gave a speech at a luncheon organized by DABS at Raffles Hotel during his brief visit to Singapore. The political chief of the Danish capital flew in from Hong Kong to meet ministers and visit companies in Singapore. In Hong Kong Copenhagen was specially invited to a gathering by the 40 largest cities in the world. Before that Jensen and his delegation were in Saragossa in Spain, where Copenhagen was handed the chairmanship of the organization Eurocities – a network of 141 European cities.

The 49-year old mayor and former minister were invited to Singapore because of the green image and the green initiatives Copenhagen has taken. One result is that today the old dirty trade harbour of Copenhagen is a popular place to swim during the short Danish summer after is has been cleaned and now declared safe.

DABS Annual Ball

A night of magic in Shangri-La

By Jan Lund

New surroundings and new entertainment.

But again it was the good old stylish glass and gala ball like nothing else in town.

Another magic night in the Danish colony. The annual DABS Ball was moved from Sentosa to the famous Hotel Shangri-La in downtown Singapore. And absolutely nobody regretted that.

It was a first time for DABS and Shangri-La to walk hand in hand – but certainly not the last. The hotel did a fantastic job from the big picture and all the way down the small details. The facilities have already been pre-reserved for next year, which might be a tough one for finding free ballrooms, since the year of the rabbit is a huge year for the Singaporean wedding industry.

Another first was that the entertainment was not in Danish language. Again it was a successful change. The Australian (quarter Danish, by the way) stand-up comedian and radio-entertainer Jonathan Atherton was absolutely outstanding. He kept everybody laughing for half an hour and could possibly not have finished on a higher note in front of this audience, than with one of Victor Borges most legendary and most difficult classics.

180 people enjoyed the great food, the fantastic atmosphere and the dance-floor which was hot as a wildfire until the early hours. Please

DABS / SBAS Golf Tournament

Hole in One

By Jan Lund

Some confusion about the winner but anyway a great day for golf at the annual Scandinavian Tournament at Laguna

A hole-in-one, scored by Mr Juha Kuntola of Glaston was the highlight of the annual Scandinavian Golf tournament organized by DABS and SBAS.

That's usually worth an economy class ticket to Scandinavia. But when Mr Kuntola and SAS-manager for South East Asia Niels-Henrik Hansen joined Eric Pedersen from Nordea on stage for the handing over of the prize, Mr Hansen spontaneously upgraded the ticket to Business Class - and by the way extended the definition of a Scandinavian country to Finland (which got a lot of laughs, since Scandinavia in the traditional definition just like SAS only includes Denmark, Sweden and Norway).

For the event itself, it was a fine day with around 70 players on the course at Laguna National Golf and Country Club and everybody seemed to have a lot of fun. The event went very smoothly except for some complaints about the point calculation (done by Laguna) in the end.

It seems Mr Peter Jantzen (former Chairman of DABS) had more points that the winner according to his own calculation. He himself did not in fact complain, but a gentleman on his flight did so, although he understood that the organizers could not interfere with the calculation done by the club.

Another player, Mr Kai Jalonen, claimed to have scored even higher, but had given in his card too late. In any case the Laguna guys had seen the card and concluded he was not in the running. All this did not ruin the good atmosphere at the dinner though. Although lot of beer was drunk, 5 cases of Carlsberg were left and were donated to the Danish Seamen's Church.

The three recognized winners were Olav Eikrem (1st) who will take the trophy to the Norwegian Embassy (the Norwegian Business Association did not officially take part in the tournament this year). A previous winner Ted Wikstrom was 2nd and Ireneo Carino of Torm Singapore 3rd.

The novelty prizes were won by:

  • Nearest to pin at #3: Teo Roy
  • Longest drive at #6: Yeo Bee Cheng
  • Nearest top Line at #11: Eirik Ellingsen
  • Nearest to Pin at #17: Tommy Lund
  • Birdie Prize: Erik Nordenskjold

Looking for inspiration - Danish PM Lars Løkke Rasmussen was guest of DABS and held talks with people from the Danish business community during a short visit to Singapore.

It was a full house event with 110 members of DABS turning up at Singapore Cricket Club when Danish premier minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen passed by Singapore as a warm up to a larger Asian trip.

It is the first time a reigning Danish PM has been in Singapore and his perspective of the current developments back in Denmark was followed closely by all. But he was not only in Singapore to talk. An important part of his mission was to listen.

Inviting a handful of Danes representing various parts of the Danish business environment for a closed early morning session underscored this point. Løkke Rasmussen was eager to learn and listen to experiences and ideas which could be part of his toolkit for his project Denmark for the future.

Apart from the DABS function in the Cricket Club, Lars Løkke Rasmussen met officials from The ministry of Education Danish PM and also had private talks with Singaporean Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

DABS' Christmas Lunch and the award "Årets Julenisse"

The Danish school in Singapore, Danish Supplementary School (DDS), became this year's winner of the prestigious award; "Årets Julenisse".
The award was, true to tradition, handed out in connection with DABS' Christmas lunch in the Danish Seamen's Church in early December, and it was the 12th time the award was given for a significant contribution to the Danish society in Singapore.
The award was received by the school Chairman Tine Falther, who has also been one of the driving forces behind the school's genesis. The school opened in August 2009 and has about 125 pupils.
Approximately the same number of people attended this year's DABS Christmas luncheon and not even a violent thunderstorm just before the beginning of the lunch could keep the attendees away. Once again they all enjoyed the traditional Danish Christmas dishes including the "ris a la mande".
The Christmas quiz was won by Bo Christensen who also won the quiz in 2008.

Ball of the (quarter) Century - DABS 25th anniversary ball

A huge turnout and great night for DABS when the 25th anniversary was celebrated at Sentosa. 265 members and friends of DABS and the Danish Community celebrated the 25 year anniversary party in style at Amara Sanctuary Resort at Sentosa. It was the largest turnout in the history of the association and all really had a ball, so to speak.

Everybody dressed up - in some ways dressed down - the celebration turned out to be a classic high end event with colourful ladies in all kind of fashion dresses and smart but maybe not so colorful gentlemen in black tuxedos - as observed by guest speaker Uffe Elleman Jensen. The former Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs has been an often and always welcome guest in DABS during the years and were also the guest speaker at the inauguration in 1984. He remarked that in the younger years of DABS men often showed up in tuxedo jackets of various colours. This time he was the only one flashing a white one.

Another great Dane, Amin Jensen, took care of the entertainment. His multi-one-manshow on words, voice, harmonica (harp) and guitar in a mix of Danish and English was highly appreciated.
Another highlight was the close to midnight celebration of Uffe Elleman Jensen, who was turning 68 at the stroke of midnight. DABS had organized a large birthday cake, which he cut open together with wife Alice Westergaard, a former TV-personality and magazine editor in Denmark. The Royal Danish Embassy was the happy sponsor of birthday champagne for both DABS and Jensen.

Later the party were ignited by the debut of the DanSing Band, a Danish party band glued together for the occasion by expats with Line Elmer the lead singer and local boss at shipping company Lauritzen, Tom Hansen, as lead guitarist. From there it was all night out party - and hundreds of Danes showing that they KNOW how to party.

"Spot-on in the Cricket Club" - Luncheon with the former Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Uffe Ellemann-Jensen.

Around 100 members and friends of DABS showed up in Singapore Cricket Club for DABS' 25th anniversary luncheon with Uffe Elleman-Jensen as guest speaker. In a fine and well-received address, the former Danish minister of Foreign Affairs took a broader view of the world in the past 25 years and showed that he still is a keen and sharp observer of what's going on around the globe. Answering a question about who would be the coming president of the EU he said with usual flick in the eye: "Well Tony Blair is the best qualified - so it will definitely not be him. It will probably be a completely unknown Dutchman". As it turned out a week later he was close to spot-on when Herman van Rompuy from the Flemish-speaking Belgian diaspora got the EU top-job.

On 28 November DABS held its yearly traditional Danish Christmas Lunch. Almost one hundred guests enjoyed the afternoon in the beautiful surroundings of the Danish Seamen's Church on Pender Road.

Every year DABS nominates a person, who has made an special contribution to the Danish community, with the title "Årets Julenisse". This year's "Julenisse" is Søs Bertelsen, who has made a major contribution to the Danish Seamen's Church playgroup and has helped expecting mothers, and mothers with young children in many ways. Søs has also been heavily involved in the organization of the Christmas Bazaar in the church. Her warm, sunny, friendly and positive approach has been much admired and appreciated.
